Around Alone an American Promise
2011 marks the 25th anniversary of Dodge Morgan successful solo-circumnavigation. Dodge was not the first to navigate the globe alone but he was the first American and he accomplished his feat in the record time of 150 days shattering the previous record of 292 days. Sadly, Dodge Morgan passed on September 14, 2010 just shy of the 25th anniversary of his record breaking voyage.
Join Maine Maritime Museum as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Maine sailor Dodge Morgan’s record breaking solo-circumnavigation. We will begin the celebration with a screening of “Around Alone” the documentary film that followed Dodge during his epic adventure aboard American Promise and was a featured program on PBS “Adventure”. Following the screening we will hear reflections of Dodge’s accomplishments from members of his circumnavigation team and those whom he inspired as well as have an opportunity to go aboard American Promise for a dock side tour of this unique vessel.
This event will be held at the Portland Company Complex on Fore St in Portland.

In 1983, Dodge Morgan, then 53, sold his electronics company and made a promise to himself: he would sail around the world, alone, without stopping. He hoped to complete the 27,459-nautical-mile voyage onboard his 60-foot cutter, American Promise, in 220 days. That would require him to sail 100 miles a day at an average speed of 6.25 knots. As Morgan boarded American Promise in Bermuda, dressed in a tuxedo and red suspenders, his weather router Bob Rice reported, “I don’t think you’ll run into a terribly large problem of being becalmed.” But even experienced weather routers can blow a call or two.
